Dodd Creative Supply

Branding • CONSULTING

Dodd Creative Supply (DCS) is an art retail space that serves the artistic and educational community of the Lamar Dodd School of Art.

As an art director at the Layton Design Studio, I collaborated with a team of designers to conceptualize, develop, and execute a brand identity for DCS.

We keep students inspired, supplied, and creating. When you shop with us today, you support artists tomorrow. Stock up, give back, and keep the Dodd odd.

We initiated a series of workshops using word association, mind mapping, and mood boards to pitch unique names and visual concepts to our client.

These focused on a range of approaches that matched the artistic and creative energy of the art school.

The name Dodd Creative Supply was chosen for its familiar yet professional tone, making it easy to remember and trust.

We moved forward with a visual concept that incorporates contemporary design and Risograph printing — a resource that the client uses daily. The concept encapsulates a bold, modular approach that mirrors the dynamic, creative energy of the art school.

I was a part of a team that organized a logo workshop for our studio to brainstorm a large body of potential logos. I helped create a plan for each stage and facilitated the execution of the workshop.

We created 4 rotating groups that sat in stations for different types of logos: wordmark, abstract, pictorial, and mascot.

The store's business model was designed to create additional funding for the art school's microgrants. We therefore felt that the safety pin was the best visual device to express this circularity as it forms a closed loop.

The safety pin also symbolizes unity and expresses safe spaces for marginalized groups – a fitting representation of the art school.

Our creative decisions were driven by our client’s limited resources and access to software, ensuring accessible implementation the brand’s identity.

This was reflected in the final toolkit that we provided our client. In particular, we created guides and templates for creating promotional material using word processing programs and the Risograph.

This design project was unique because the store itself was still in early stages of development. This provided me with the experience of conceptualizing how a brand would flexibly work in a variety of spaces, since the physical space did not yet exist and the plans for it were still in progress.

Additionally, our client was very open and receptive to most of the ideas we presented. We worked closely with them to pinpoint the exact needs of the brand, helping them choose the best-suited concept.

Dodd Creative Supply was a project close to home, being a part of the Dodd art community myself. It was inspiring to help design a brand for art students, and I'm excited to see DCS expand, grow, and support more artists.
